Easter in Pomerode will have a giant egg inspired by half-timbered houses


The Osterfest decoration pays homage to the Germanic construction technique so present in the cities of the European Valley

The largest Easter egg in the world will become a giant half-timbered house in the 16th edition Osterfestthe traditional Easter celebration of Pomerode which will take place from 8 February to 31 March.




The homage to the construction technique characteristic of Germanic colonization is part of the celebration that Osterfest it will mark 200 years of German immigration to Brazil: the first colony was installed in São Leopoldo, in Rio Grande do Sul, in 1824. The Catarina artist Marcela Schmidt signs the works of art for this edition.

Marcela’s project combines the rigorous symmetry of the half-timbered facades with the lightness of the flowerbeds and the vigor of the Atlantic Forest that the colonizers found in Itajaí Valley. Once the egg is installed, visitors will discover new scenes as they walk around the structure.

Real houses inspired the artwork that will illustrate the giant egg. A Home of immigrant Carl Weege (1920), which today serves as a museum in the Pomerode Fundos neighborhood, gave birth to the idea of ​​the brick base.

The half-timbered construction technique consists of pieces of wood joined together by joints, without nails or screws, forming a trellis structure. The spaces between the wood are filled with bricks, mud or other materials that German immigrants found in Brazil. About fifty of these are located along the Enxaimel itinerary, in the Testo Alto district, chosen by the United Nations (UN) as one of the best tourist villages in the world.
