The heat will be no joke in 2024, and some measures are needed to ensure the health of children
If 2023 wasn’t easier because of the record temperatures, in 2024 it should be no different. The El Niño phenomenon, one of the main causes of this heat, will be active for another six months, and this year could even break high temperature records.
It’s important to remember that extreme heat isn’t just a nuisance: it can be harmful to your health. Cases of heat stroke are expected to increase as hot days continue, making it necessary to pay particular attention to children, who sometimes fail to realize that the heat is harming them.
Larissa Dias Menis, pedagogical coordinator of Early Childhood Education and Elementary Education – Early Years at the Colégio Marista Glória, provides some guidance for taking care of children children’s health during this heat wave:
Proper hydration
Good hydration is one of the most important things for children’s health. The problem is, unless they’re thirsty, many of them forget to hydrate during the day. Therefore, encourage them to do so and avoid giving them drinks with caffeine and added sugars, as they can contribute to dehydration.
Light clothes
Have you ever heard that dark clothes make you feel warmer? This actually happens, as these colors absorb temperature more. Dress children in lightweight, light-colored clothing and breathable fabrics.
Sun protection
Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) suitable for children’s skin. Also wear wide-brimmed hats to protect your face and neck from the sun.
Outdoor activity times
Between 10am and 4pm is the time of day when it tends to be warmest, so the sun’s rays are most intense at that time. To avoid exposing your little ones to all this heat, choose to go out with them for longer walks at other times if possible.
Ventilated environment
A house with ventilated environments is essential so that high temperatures do not harm children. In this sense it is good to use fans or air conditioning, if you have one.
Pay attention to the signs
Watch for signs of heat stroke in toddlers, such as hot, dry skin, dizziness, mental confusion, and nausea. If you experience these symptoms, seek medical attention immediately.
