Does ice go bad? Does it have an expiration date?

The doctor explains if there are risks in consuming it after a long time in the freezer

Have you ever left ice in the freezer for a long time and when you consumed it, you noticed a strange taste or smell? Wondering if you’ve been “beaten”?

Taste spoke with nutritionist Isolda Prado, who states that ice does not deteriorate, even if frozen for a long time.

“But it can absorb odors from the environment. It is always a good idea to freeze drinking water that is suitable for consumption. Occasionally, some types of ice made with unsuitable water can cause some problems, such as contamination by microorganisms and parasites.”

The nutritionist also explains that if the ice absorbs odors, it could have an unpleasant taste, linked to the place of storage, for example a fishy smell. “Storing it in airtight containers helps,” he suggests.

To avoid bad odors it is necessary to regularly wash the ice tray or the machine, as well as regularly change the water used for preparation.
