Samba, sweat and health: take care of your heart this Carnival

This period requires attention to heart health, especially for those who are sedentary and have cardiovascular diseases.

Carnival is associated with fun and joy, but those who want to get into the rhythm of the party this year, from February 10th to 13th, should also pay attention to their heart health. Mainly those who are sedentary and have pre-existing cardiovascular diseases.

“The heart can be very demanding when dancing, jumping, chasing an electric trio, especially on very hot days,” says cardiologist Fernanda Tavares, of the Cardiológico Costantini Hospital, in Curitiba. The hospital is a reference in the treatment of heart diseases.

Physical exertion increases the heartbeat rate, because the heart needs to pump more blood to meet the body’s increased consumption of oxygen.

“People often exceed their physical limits, increasing the risk of heart attack or stroke,” explains Dr. Fernanda. Another aggravating factor is excessive alcohol consumption.

To reduce these risks and have a healthier time at Carnival, consult the guidelines of the cardiologist at Costantini Hospital:

• Stay hydrated – Drink plenty of water throughout the day. Dehydration can put more stress on the heart.

• Moderate alcohol consumption – If you choose to consume alcoholic beverages, moderate it. Excess alcohol can increase blood pressure and put stress on the heart.

• Be careful of the heat – Stay cool and protected from excessive heat, especially if you dance or participate in outdoor activities. Wear light clothing, protect yourself from the sun with hats and sunscreen and look for shaded areas to rest.

• Relax – Give your body time to rest and recover. Excessive tiredness can increase pressure on the heart.

• Eat healthy – Try to maintain a balanced diet that includes fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins. Avoid very fatty, salty or sugary foods, which can overload the cardiovascular system.

• Know your limits – Respect your physical limits and know when it’s time to rest. Don’t push your body beyond what it can handle, especially if you feel sick or tired.

• Pay attention to energy consumption – Excessive consumption of energy drinks can increase blood pressure and heart rate, further taxing the heart. Opt for healthier alternatives, such as water or natural juices.

• Pay attention to warning signs – Be aware of signs of heart problems, such as chest pain, shortness of breath, dizziness, or palpitations. If you experience any of these symptoms, seek medical attention immediately.
