However, often, in an attempt to achieve this goal, the paths chosen are harmful to the body, as explained by Danielle Toledo, nutritionist at Conexa, a leading digital ecosystem for integral health in Latin America.
The adoption of an eating behavior with rigid diets, miracle pills, herbal teas, anti-fat creams, use of injections, diuretics and drastic changes is motivated by the desire for social belonging, in view of the perception of a positive self-image. “Many do not worry about negative consequences, as long as their appearance fits into contemporary ideas,” says the nutritionist. He discovers the most common mistakes people make when trying to lose weight:
1. Not understanding the limits of your body
According to Danielle, during weight loss, you need to understand the body’s processes and limitations very well. Often, methods that seem clear and quick lose weight they are not that effective. Counting calories and embarking on liquid diets, for example, are attitudes that can significantly upset the plans of those who want to reduce their size.
“To lose weight in a healthy way it is necessary to seek nutritional balance, respecting one’s individuality, without giving in to miracles or presumed magic formulas. People seek immediacy, but the process of losing weight takes time, patience and consistency”, he says the nutritionist.
2. Not planning your meals or taking care of your sleep
According to the nutritionist, it is important, throughout the process, to define realistic goals, plan meals and understand the signs hunger against satiety, practice physical activity and take care of the quality of sleep.

3. Inappropriate use of supplements
Supplements serve several purposes. “They are used to lose weight, gain weight, increase muscle mass and increase immune defenses. On a single shelf you can find an infinite number of supplements that promise a healthier and more attentive life, but who thinks that health can only be solved with many capsules “, warns the nutritionist.
With the role of supplementing the diet and compensating for any deficiencies in essential nutrients for the proper functioning of the body, supplements “can never replace a meal with natural foods, because their role is always that of support”, he warns.
The consumption of supplements has grown in recent years in Brazil. However, despite the benefits, it is necessary to pay attention to the possible risks associated with its use. Nutritionist Danielle Toledo explains that supplementation becomes important in a diet only when the macronutrients, micronutrients and phytochemicals necessary for the body to function properly cannot be obtained from foods. A well-designed diet will rarely need to be supplemented with supplements.
4. Lack of expert guidance
Monitoring by a nutritionist is essential to identify whether there is a real need to use the supplement and, if necessary, a correct prescription is made, thus avoiding future problems. “Not everyone can or needs to use supplements. Only nutritional monitoring and routine testing will determine whether or not the need is necessary, whether due to deficiency or other goals,” she says.
