Find out how the innovative structure that led the Alvirrubra Samba School to victory in the 2024 Rio de Janeiro Carnival works

The secret of the Viradouro snake has been revealed. The imposing snake that twirled along the avenue during the samba school parade Unidos do Viradouroat the end of the Grupo Especial parades, it was led by Wesley Torquato, a young 23-year-old dancer.



Contrary to expectations that the snake was a robot, Wesley explained that he controlled the allegory manually, lying on a skateboard inside the structure, using a controller to direct the snake’s movements. The technique behind this innovation was shared by Wesley himself on his social networks.

In a video, he demonstrated how the control mechanism worked, giving viewers a behind-the-scenes look at this unique creation. In the Instagram post, the choreographer made the revelation. “Yes! I am the snake of the Viradouro commission! Still in ecstasy about everything that happened yesterday, it was something surreal what I experienced, I have no words to thank, thanks to my orixás who always guide me”, he wrote.

Unidos do Viradouro won the title of champion of the Rio de Janeiro Carnival in 2024. Representing the city of Niterói, the samba school stood out with a plot centered on the veneration of snakes in African culture. With the plot Arroboboi, DangbéViradouro has appealed for the protection of the iconic mythical serpent, thus ensuring it has a prominent place in this year’s carnival.

The jaguar by Paolla Oliveira

In addition to the Viradouro snake, Paola Oliveirawith her jaguar costume, she was also a highlight of the 2024 carnival. The actress paraded through the Grande Rio, under the theme of Our destiny is to be Jaguaras drum queen, this Sunday, the 11th.

In an interview with the Gshowthe owner of the studio responsible for the project, Bruno Oliveira, explained that the helmet was made with an Arduino motor (which coordinates the position and movement of the mask), as well as LED sensors, located in the jaguar’s eyes.

“We really like the boldness and these transformations. It was the perfect match with what Paolla was looking for at the moment and what we like to achieve,” he said. Production of the costume began in September. Find out more details about how the structure worked.
