Two important themes for the Brazilian Cheese World Cup: cows will be happier in Sao Paulo and the largest cheese table in that country’s history will be held at the Palácio dos Bandeirantes
Guilherme Piai, Secretary of Agriculture of São Paulo, invited all artisanal producers to the event “A new brand for São Paulo’s Agro” on February 28 in the Salão Nobre of the secretariat, in the center of the city. The goal is to announce the creation of the state animal welfare program and the launch of the new model for identifying vaccination against brucellosis. “We are expanding SISP Artesanal to other products besides cheese,” he announces.
The success in regularizing artisan cheese producers, mainly by freeing up the flow within dairies and authorizing the preparation of many cheese and dairy recipes in the same production room, making the producers’ lives much simpler (and killing envy of Minas Gerais (who are far from enjoying this joy with the IMA inspectors), Guilherme has now decided to address a very sensitive issue for consumers: animal welfare.
Today, consumers want transparency throughout the food chain. He wants to know what the herd eats, how it is treated, he also wants to know the name of the cow, to make sure it is not just a number in the farm’s productivity tables. “Those who eat cheese and other artisanal products of animal origin, consume history and culture together with the product, it is no longer possible to accept any type of suffering for animals”, announces the secretary.
A spoiler of the program, among other news, is that in Sao Paulo the cows will no longer be branded with fire: the ladies will have identifying earrings, as happens in France. The state has already achieved 100% immunization of livestock against foot-and-mouth disease and 99% against brucellosis, the best result in more than 20 years. Better than this would be the launch of Bolsa Vaca to benefit São Paulo’s 11 million cattle. We are not far away.
Solidarity cheese at the Palácio dos Bandeirantes
Guilherme was also responsible for organizing, together with Governor Tarcisio and First Lady Cristiane, the donation of cheeses from the Brazilian Cheese World Cup, which will take place at the B32 Theater on April 12, to the State Solidarity Fund. “The organization of the competition estimates two tons of cheese, you can imagine that whoever sends a cheese to the competition chooses its best product. All the cheeses have some type of certification, municipal, state or federal, they are safe and deserve the best fate to be evaluated.”
Another spoiler: the noble destiny of the cheeses will be to be part of the largest cheese table ever seen in Brazil. It will be the main dish of the competition’s awards ceremony, which will be held in the main hall of the Palácio dos Bandeirantes, on the night of April 12, together with the best wines, breads and cured meats of São Paulo…
The proceeds from the sale of tickets for the event will also be donated to the Solidarity Fund. On the same night, the ceremony of the Guilde Internacionale des Fromagers, the prestigious international association sponsoring the Cheese World Cup, will be held, which will award the prizes to the winning producers.
I continue to imagine these foreigners in awe, first in front of the modern beauty of the B32 Theater during the day, at the competition, and then in front of the traditional nobility of the rooms of the Palácio dos Bandeirantes. Yes, Brazil has many good cheeses and the public policies for artisanal cheeses in Sao Paulo are among the best in Brazil.
