This type of decoration gives space to emotional memories and makes the environment welcoming.
Retro decor brings an air of nostalgia, taking us back to decades past and, often, the comfort we felt when we were at our grandparents’ house. Today we tend to recreate this style by seeking this affective memory and with the aim of providing those same memories to those we love in the future.
To revive this special atmosphere today, people have looked for projects with more life, color and special details, with the aim of cooking for the new generations with the same love as in the past. The one who has a lot of experience on the subject is the architect Cristiane Schiavoni, who takes advantage of the fever for Kitchens retro and offers advice for those who are thinking of venturing into this style. Watch!
1. Main characteristics and materials
Among the elements that characterize the kitchens of previous decades are the presence of colors, the use of fired concrete, the preference for furniture and accessories in steel, iron or wood, cabinets with padded language, coverings such as hydraulic tiles and tiles, among the other notable features.
However, it is worth remembering that retro cuisine translates into a rereading of past works, which refer to feelings. Therefore, it is possible to make smart and more convenient replacements, while always maintaining the nostalgia.
2. Colors in the right size
Many people would like to create a retro kitchen at home, but are afraid of overdoing it with colors. The good news is that when adapting this style, you don’t need to use color as much as before. “Currently it is possible to create a language with pastel or very light tones of yellow, pink, blue or green. Since they are very soft, it is possible to carry this language in a light way. For those who like something stronger, they can include a more vivid in a piece of furniture, for example, and balance it with more neutral tones on the walls, appliances and other accessories”, explains Cristiane.

3. Coatings
For those who love a beautiful and practical kitchen, know that it is possible to use modernity to your advantage. “Today we have many materials with a retro design, but which have only recently been launched on the market. An example of this is porcelain stoneware which resembles hydraulic tiles and offer wide variety of prints. This way you can have the functionality of a waterproof and easy-to-clean product, together with the inspiration of previous decades”, advises the architect.
In the case of inserts or hexagonal pieces the same concept applies. According to the professional, it is possible to find porcelain or ceramic models that have a low absorption rate, but which have the same nostalgic look as period pieces. Ultimately, the range of possibilities is quite wide.
Still talking about pieces for coverings or floors, there are very characteristic and suggestive models. “The ideal is to create a harmonious composition between the color palette and the covering designs so that there is not a strong contrast, for example, with the furniture. It is always good to balance”, he advises.

4. Types of furniture
One piece of advice is to opt for melamine or even PVC materials that are fine resistant and modern, which can be included in the furnishing of projects.
5. Device options
According to the architect, when it comes to retro appliances, the variety of lines available on the market is not yet as wide as that of the other products mentioned. “However, it is worth exploring the options on sale today, because the results are incredible. And, as demand for the model increases, new launches may appear soon,” says Cristiane.
6. Pay attention to the harmony of the environment
Finally, Cristiane reveals the main challenge in creating a retro kitchen. “It is essential to keep an eye on the harmony of the environment. In general, the client wants to place many elements nice in one place, but you have to be selective. Therefore the project is also made up of choices, of what must be given up. The ideal is to choose what you like best, choose materials that balance the aesthetics of the kitchen, without losing functionality”, he concludes.
