Woman died while frying eggs: the risks of mixing water with boiling oil

Elisângela Oliveira de Jesus, 33, suffered burns while frying an egg and died after 10 days in hospital

The case of Elisângela Oliveira de Jesus, 33, who died after being hospitalized for burns sustained on her body while frying an egg, in the hinterland of São Paulo, raised the alarm about the risks of domestic accidents in the kitchen.

The explosion caused by mixing oil and hot water is one of the biggest dangers in the kitchen. Only unmixed, very heated hot oil can start a fire. With water, the risk of the flame rising and hitting your face is even greater.

“Because the water is denser, it goes under the pan, evaporates, then the drops of water begin to burst and this jet of water causes this projection of boiling oil, we already have a fire there,” said a professional of the security, called Felipe, during his participation in Globo’s “Encontro”, this Tuesday (27).

If the person has suffered a burn, the advice is to place the burned part under cold running water where the jet is not too strong and urgently contact a doctor. You should never apply “homemade recipes” such as toothpaste or butter, which can increase the severity of the burn.

Hot fat is a risk factor for kitchen accidents. According to the indications published in a text by Fiocruz, if the fat catches fire, you should never throw water on it.

“Try to put out the fire by suffocating it, for example using a pan lid.”

See other tips to avoid burn or fire accidents:

1- Cook, preferably, on the burners behind the stove.

2- Do not let children near the lit stove and avoid long tablecloths on the table, which could allow them to pull it and spill hot foods or liquids.

3- Always keep the pan handles facing towards the inside of the stove.

4- Do not store food on shelves or cabinets above the stove.

5- Periodically check the pressure cooker valve to see if it is not blocked, as this is the cause of most explosions in this type of cooker.

6- Cooking gas is highly flammable. Therefore always check for leaks and, if you suspect, never use matches to check, as there is a risk of explosions.
