Land of pumas, the Torres del Paine region in Chilean Patagonia has just released the rare record of one of the smallest wild cats in the world.
Image by Geoffroy (Leopard geoffroyi) was only possible thanks to the camera traps installed in strategic points of the Torres del Paine National Park, 1h30 from Puerto Natales.
This is the only way to have evidence of this rare feline the size of a domestic cat, which usually hides among the branches of the Patagonian forests.
Until 2019, Geoffroy was something of a Patagonian myth, as it was quite rare to find him in the region. With the installation of cameras, the meeting began to be considered a positive sign of the successful relationship between the environment and tourism.
“[As trilhas de Las Torres Patagonia] they look better and are a good place for cats to hunt, which is why they use these corridors quite regularly,” explains ranger Héctor Parra in a note sent to Travel by fare.

The video images were taken by the cameras of Parra, leader of the monitoring program financed by the Torres Patagonia hotel, in the middle of the maintenance work season on the Torres del Paine trails which, since 2015, have taken place from November to March.
In 2023 alone, for example, monitoring of the paths of the Patagonia reserve of Las Torres revealed the presence of 13 animal species (75% native) and 25% introduced, including 10 birds and 3 mammals, belonging to six different families.
