Stretching and muscle strengthening can help treat the condition
You know that neck pain that never goes away? Sometimes the discomfort is so great that it hinders even the simplest tasks of the day. Getting to the root of the problem is not always easy since, depending on the situation, a series of investigations need to be carried out. But there is a factor, common to many people, that can be the cause of neck pain: stress.
According to the director of the Center for Orthopedics and Traumatology (NOT), Daniel Oliveira, specialized in the spine, stress can lead to poor posture and unconscious muscle stiffness in the neck region. “When we are under great stress, even without realizing it, we often adopt postures that can be harmful, such as leaning forward or shrugging our shoulders,” he explains.
According to the expert, stress can also lead to an inflammatory response in the body, causing the body to take longer to heal from injuries or muscle strains. “Additionally, it can change the way the body perceives pain and increase the body’s sensitivity to it, generating an even more intense experience.”
How to cure neck pain
One of the ways to get rid of neck pain caused by stress is to perform specific exercises and gentle stretches to increase flexibility. Placing hot water bottles on the area and sleeping, without having to wake up, are simpler techniques that can also help relieve pain.
According to the orthopedist, “giving the body adequate rest, always staying hydrated and prioritizing a balanced diet” are important to avoid and treat pain in the region.
Other tips include strengthening your upper back muscles. The measure helps the body, in times of stress, to react and avoid more acute pain that lasts a long time.
There is also the possibility of performing massages focused on the manipulation of soft tissues, a technique that helps relieve, among other things, muscle discomfort caused by daily stress.
Forest Bathing, the Japanese therapy that reduces stress
Don’t forget that sitting in the wrong position in your office chair can also contribute to neck pain. Every now and then, you need to take a walk and stretch.
According to Oliveira, one of the ways to treat neck pain caused by stress is to perform “techniques such as meditation and deep breathing.” The doctor reiterates that, in case of persistent pain, it is necessary to consult specialists such as orthopedists, physiotherapists and chiropractors so that it is possible to have a complete diagnosis and carry out adequate treatment.
