Is it okay to exercise while wearing makeup?

Doctor Danilo Talarico, full professor of trichology and hair transplantation, explains that wearing makeup to train is not a good idea. “In addition to the aesthetic problem of melting and drooling with the little sweat that is produced, due to the mechanisms of containment of the production of sebum and sweat present in the products, we run into the impediment of the natural response of the skin tissue to physical exercise”, he replies .

He adds that exercise causes an increase in microregional vascular dilation, that is, of blood vessels, which generates a cascade of changes. In addition to the production of sweat which helps regulate our body temperature, there is an increase in sebum production, water retention (hydration) and dilation of the skin openings (pores).

Even the use of good makeup, non-comedogenic, oil-free, paraben-free and with a low allergenic index, will hinder or even prevent our skin’s response to this reflex of physical activity”, concludes the doctor.

Experiment with basic usage

A small study recently published on Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology tested the effects of applying foundation on the skin during aerobic exercise.

The study involved 43 healthy college students (20 men and 23 women). The foundation was applied to half of the participants’ faces in two different areas (forehead and upper cheek). The other half of the face served as a control.

Moisture increased after exercise in both the no-makeup and no-makeup zones; however, there was a greater increase in moisture in the areas of makeup, which may be a result of the makeup preventing moisture from evaporating from the skin.

Pore ​​size increased in makeup-free skin after exercise, but not significantly in makeup-treated skin. This could indicate that wearing makeup can clog your pores. The oil level increased in areas without makeup and decreased in areas with makeup, suggesting that it may be difficult to maintain adequate levels of oil in the skin when wearing makeup.

“For skin health, it is better to exercise without makeup,” said study author Dongsun Park of Korea National Education University.
