Notice the signs that you are sabotaging yourself during the job interview

The expert explains the importance of paying attention to certain behaviors so as not to miss an opportunity

Brazil ended 2023 with a balance of 1.48 million formal jobs according to Caged data and the forecast for the first half of 2024 is that the hiring market will continue to be hot, mainly in the retail segments , food and logistics due to the strong demand, caused by Easter and the increase in online trade.

Despite the increasing number of vacancies, the candidate can face several failures in the search due to unconscious self-sabotage, i.e. when he creates mental barriers and obstacles that prevent him from completing the challenge.

“We often see signs of this behavior. It can be excessive nervousness that harms communication, such as a lack of clarity in objectives, excessive confidence and a lack of in-depth knowledge of the skills necessary to carry out the activities proposed in the desired vacancy”, explains Debora Herdeiro, recruitment and selection manager at Luandre RH .

The expert cites some signs of self-sabotage noticed by recruiters during a job interview, which can easily be remedied. “The professional does not realize that he is reducing his chances of advancing to the next stages,” he comments.

Focus on the things that are missing

The recruiter wants to know relevant facts about your professional career, highlights, awards and certifications, but the candidate highlights problems or focuses on things that were missing in your career.

“Ideally, the professional should do a self-analysis and prepare before the interview. Knowing how to talk about your qualities and successes is a good start”, reiterates Debora.

Continuous search for approval

It is very common that people who sabotage themselves are always looking for approval, both in their personal and professional lives. This also happens during job interviews. Always talking about recognition throughout your professional career is a clear sign that the person lacks self-confidence and demonstrates uncertainty about their identity.

“It’s important to know your value, but it must be presented in the right way,” says Debora.

Fear of failure

Showing excessive fear of failure can be a clear sign that the candidate will not be able to carry out tasks because he believes he does not have the skills to carry them out. For Debora Herdeiro, “a person with this feeling shows recruiters that they are not ready for the challenges that arise on a daily basis.”

Thinking you know everything

A candidate who seems to know everything and isn’t willing to learn new techniques or ways of working is also not a good sign. Even if a person brings with him a wealth of experience, there is always something new to learn.

Candidates who do not demonstrate this openness may give up at the first obstacle or difficulty that arises during the employment relationship.
