Discover the factors that increase cases of urinary incontinence

The disease appeared mainly in younger women

Experts at the Hospital do Servidor Público Estadual (HSPE) warn about the prevalence of urinary incontinence in young women. Lorella Auricchio, urologist at the HSPE, draws attention to the risks, as currently one in four women over 40 is affected by the disease.

This is because a significant part of women work for a long time sitting and do not take a break to go to the toilet properly, holding urine. Ideally, every 3 to 4 hours, men and women empty their bladders to avoid incontinence or urinary infections.

Urinary incontinence is known as involuntary loss of urine and is common, especially in women. The possibility of leakage increases during pregnancy, as the belly grows and causes greater abdominal pressure during this period. However, young women have reported that they have difficulty controlling their pee and this is due to their lifestyle.

Types of urinary incontinence

There are two types of urinary incontinence: urgency, when it is not possible to get to the bathroom in time, or stress. In young women, you may usually notice urine leakage during vigorous, high-impact physical activities, such as weight lifting, running, and jumping.

In addition to sitting, smoking, drinking alcohol, obesity, poor diet and lack of exercise also contribute to urine loss.

“If the person has had a leak of pee once in their life because it was too tight, there is no problem. But you need to be careful if the situation recurs, even if only briefly. It is very common to observe that people have normalized urine leakage, but the problem needs to be investigated as it may be associated with other diseases. Sometimes changing habits helps, but there are cases that require surgery (sling) for a definitive treatment, aimed at improving the patient’s quality of life”, explains Lorella.

In addition to behavioral measures and lifestyle changes, there is another method to prevent cases: specific physiotherapy to strengthen the pelvic floor. If urine leakage recurs, you should consult a urologist for a correct diagnosis and the best treatment.
