History of San Pedro

Born in Galilee, Saint Peter worked as a fisherman with his father and brother, the apostle Andrew. Until one day, having failed to catch anything, he met Jesus, who asked to use one of his boats to carry the word of God to a crowd that was waiting for him. Along with James and John, Peter listened to the preaching and, at the end, Jesus asked him to once again try fishing with his boat. Even though he didn’t really believe in the outcome of that request, he agreed to try. To everyone’s surprise, Peter returned with all the nets full of fish.

In these events the name of Peter was Simon, however Jesus Christ himself named him, as it is said in the passage of the Gospel of Matthew, in chapter 16: “therefore I tell you: you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my Church, and the forces of hell will not be able to overcome it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven: everything you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and everything you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven“.

In life, Peter witnessed several miracles and great works of Jesus and, even so, at the time of the Passion, the saint denied Christ three times. With the descent of the Holy Spirit, on the day of Pentecost, the Lord made Peter a preacher of the Gospel, demonstrating that divine power was in his life. Peter lived a life based on God’s holy words. At one point he reached Jerusalem and was arrested by order of King Herod Agrippa I.

When he was sent to Rome, he was able to bring Christian knowledge to many people and thus built a community of which he became bishop. Therefore, he is considered the first pope in history, since he was designated as the first bishop of Rome. Because of his faith, the saint was persecuted and imprisoned twice, by order of the emperor Nero. On the last day of his life he asked to be crucified upside down, because he did not believe he was worthy to die like Jesus.
