Is it possible to lose weight too quickly? Or is this the path to failure?
Summary
A survey conducted among participants of the American program “The Biggest Loser” showed that six years after losing weight, 13 of the 14 participants had regained weight. Most alarmingly, they burned significantly fewer calories even after they regained weight, even though their metabolic rate depended on body weight.

Most diets emphasize how quickly they make you lose weight, which may be why they fail. Research suggest that losing weight too quickly and radically can make it easier to gain it back (and harder to lose it again).
Scientists studied participants of the program “The Biggest Loser” in the United States. They analyzed them after the weight loss and followed them up six years later. Most participants (13 of 14) regained weight at follow-up. But there’s another detail: After they regained weight, their metabolism was slower than before and they burned significantly fewer calories.
Despite what some believe, the heavier you are you burn more calories. This is because your metabolic rate depends on your body weight. The more you weigh, the more energy your body burns to function.
On average, the group burned 2,600 calories a day before the competition. After weight loss, that number dropped to about 2,000 calories per day. However, once the weight is back on Request By age 6, calorie consumption slowed to just 1,900 calories per day.
There are many potential reasons for this result, but it’s another sign that doing too much too soon is not only unsustainable, but can also test the limits of how quickly your body wants to lose weight and therefore make it harder to keep it off.
That doesn’t mean you can’t be aggressive about losing weight, but it does mean you should be wary of promises that try to help you lose it as quickly as possible at any cost. Instead, we’ve seen thousands of people transform their health by focusing on sustainable habits and routines.
Healthy weight loss is typically a pound to a pound per week maximum. And the less weight you have to lose, the slower the process will be.
