Boyfriend blush: 5 tips to follow the trend

Makeup artist Emerson Damas reveals the tricks to achieving the flushed-cheeked aesthetic

The fashion and beauty trends of the 90s have arrived with everything in 2024. The trend is “the boyfriend blushes” (boyfriend’s blush, in free translation), which consists of leaving the cheeks red, focusing on the pink color.

Fashion “the boyfriend blushes” tries to replicate the effect of the way players’ faces look after a football match or any sports practice, hence the origin of the trend’s name.

Makeup artist Emerson Damas explains that the trend brings a fresh, relaxed approach to blush application, offering a natural, healthy look that’s perfect for everyday life.

“It’s versatile and easy to adopt. With the right tips and a little practice, anyone can incorporate this style into their daily makeup routine,” says the pro.

“Boyfriend blush” is already all the rage among fashionistas and promises to be a hit this season. Below, the makeup artist shared tips for making your makeup look lighter and more natural.

1. Take a soft approach

Rather than creating dramatic contours, the makeup artist recommends focusing on adding soft, healthy color to your cheekbones, mimicking the natural blush you’d get after light physical activity.

2. Choose the right tone

Choose the right shade of blush for your skin tone. “Opt for soft, natural tones that suit your skin, avoiding very bright or contrasting colors,” says Emerson.

3. Apply gently

Use a soft, fluffy brush to apply the blush. Start from the cheekbones and blend gently towards the temples. “This will create a soft, natural effect without defined lines,” says the makeup artist.

4. Less is more

Apply a small amount of product at a time and increase the intensity as needed. “The goal is to achieve a soft, understated look, rather than something overly dramatic,” reveals the pro.

5. Finish with a touch of highlighter

Try adding a little highlighter to the higher areas of your face, such as your cheekbones, brow bone, and nose. “This will help enhance the natural effect of the blush and create a healthy glow on the skin,” concludes Emerson.
