The specialist warns about habits that can worsen the disease and recommends actions to avoid it
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), high blood pressure, also called arterial hypertension, affects approximately 1.3 billion people worldwide. The numbers were released recently by the organization, which also highlighted that half of Brazilians in their 30s are affected by the disease, worrying experts.
“The research reveals a worrying result, as it shows that eating habits and good health practices have worsened in recent years”, comments Vagner Cezar, coordinator of the Nursing course at the Faculdade Anhanguera.
Factors that increase blood pressure
Part of the worsening of hypertension is due to excessive sodium consumption, which is present in most processed foods, as well as being part of daily meal preparation, both at home and in restaurants.
According to the WHO, the recommended consumption is 5 g per day. “In addition to the big bad that is salt, other factors contribute to this scenario, such as sedentary lifestyle, overweight and obesity, age and alcohol consumption,” says Vagner Cezar.

Risks of the disease
Also considered one of the main risk factors for the development of heart diseasehypertension is associated with the onset of chronic non-communicable diseases, responsible for high mortality rates, such as cerebrovascular diseases (stroke), cardiovascular diseases, chronic kidney disease, among others.
Ways to prevent
According to Vagner Cezar, prevention is the best way to fight the disease. “The diagnosed patient must undergo medical follow-up, in which the professional will prescribe medications and indicate measures such as phisical exercises and balanced. Genetic and socioeconomic factors also influence, which must be considered in treatment”, explains the specialist, who also lists some daily attitudes:
- Stop smoking and avoid drinking alcoholic beverages;
- Consume foods rich in fiber;
- Avoid excess salt and fat in your diet;
- Take care of your mental health: stress can also be a risk factor.
