Nasal Neti pot: find out what it is, benefits and how to use it

With a kettle-like shape, the neti pot is a device suitable for performing nasal washing at high volume and low pressure. “It is a very old container, used for many years and which can be found in pharmacies or even in online stores”, explains the Dr. Carolina Brotto de Azevedootolaryngologist.




In this method the serum enters the nose only with the help of gravity, says the Dr. Maura Neves, otolaryngologist at the University of Sao Paulo (USP).

“A big advantage of the neti pot over other nasal rinsing devices is that, being pressure-free, tends to cause less ear discomfort during use“, adds Azevedo.

How to use nasal neti pot?

  • First, make sure your device is clean.
  • Add warm saline solution;
  • Tilt your head slightly forward and turn it towards the opposite side of the nostril that will be irrigated;
  • Insert the nozzle of the neti pot into the entrance of the nostril;
  • Open your mouth;
  • Tilt the bottle and let the saline solution drip, which may take a few seconds to come out the other side;
  • Repeat the process in the other nostril.

Throughout the process, it is necessary keep your mouth open breathe and avoid the serum entering the throat causing suffocation.

What liquids can be used for nasal washing?

The nose should never be washed with water, as this could encourage contamination. “The best thing is for washing with a neti pot or any other device to be guided by a doctor. If done correctly and following the necessary precautions, it is a safe technique,” ​​recalls Azevedo.

Can you wash your nose even if you have the flu?

The answer is YES. If you have the flu, rinsing your nose with a neti pot can help reduce the intensity and duration of respiratory symptoms, experts say.

“However, if the nose is very obstructed and there is difficulty in the outflow of serum, do not force or crush the deviceas this can cause discomfort and ear problems,” warns Dr. Jamal.
