Research reveals that dogs and cats are no longer “pets” but have become part of the family; find out more
The love for animals has never been more evident in Brazil. An unprecedented study conducted by Serasa, in collaboration with the Opinion Box Institute, revealed that 65% of Brazilian owners are willing to invest whatever is necessary for the well-being of their pets. More than half (52%) say they already put the needs of their pets before their personal expenses.
The research confirms what many already noticed in everyday life: dogs and cats are no longer just “pets” but become members of the family, with guaranteed space in the budget, on the sofa and in the heart.
A bond that goes beyond affection
The numbers demonstrate that the financial investment is accompanied by a significant emotional gain. Eight in ten pet owners say the emotional benefits of having a pet outweigh any financial costs. Of those surveyed, 89% said their pets improved their emotional well-being, while 92% reported a decrease in loneliness and stress. This symbiotic relationship creates a virtuous cycle: pets receive more care and owners, in return, feel calmer, happier and emotionally supported.
How much Brazilians spend on their animals
According to the survey, 41% of owners spend up to R$300 per month on their pets, including food, veterinary care and accessories. For 48% this expense represents up to 5% of their monthly income, while 31% invest between 6% and 10% of their budget. Treatment, however, is not the job of just one person. 39% of owners share the costs with their family or partner, demonstrating that pet care has become a collective commitment within homes.
The growth of multispecies families
Another interesting fact that emerged from the study is that 58% of Brazilian owners have more than one pet, indicative of the increase in so-called multispecies families, those in which humans and animals share the same space and affection as a true family unit.
Even the way pets arrive in homes reveals a positive change: 39% have been adopted, 32% saved from abandonment and 27% received as gifts. This statistic shows that awareness about responsible adoption and animal rescue is growing, strengthening the sense of empathy and social responsibility among Brazilians.
Animals and well-being: a bond of love and health
Having an animal at home is, for many, a natural remedy against loneliness and stress. The presence of dogs and cats is associated with the release of oxytocin, the feel-good hormone, and the strengthening of a sense of belonging.
More than just faithful companions, pets represent a form of emotional connection that improves mood, reduces anxiety and encourages healthier habits, such as walks and moments of relaxation. In a country where hectic routine and urban stress are part of daily life, pets play an essential role: reminding owners of the importance of affection, presence and care.
