Experts explain how the anesthetic procedure works for those who want to have large tattoos on their skin without feeling pain

The fear of the pain that a tattoo needle can cause in some areas of the body pushes artists and anonymous people to resort to an unusual solution: getting completely tattooed under anesthesia. Yes, you get general anesthesia for the procedure.

From February 2023, the Nitrogen tattoo, in Sao Paulo, offers the service. In an interview with Earth, the clinic team explained how each step of the tattoo process works under general anesthesia. For the operation they make use of two anesthetists, a general practitioner, a nurse and a nursing assistant, as well as tattoo artists who carry out their work with the company.

Anesthesiologist Rômulo Navajas explains that the idea was born from the perception that professionals in the sector are involved in processes that are not strictly surgical, such as dermatological aesthetic procedures and sedation for some diagnostic tests.

“Speaking of tattoos, pain has always been an obstacle in this field, where many jobs are not completed, or are finished in an unexpected way due to pain. And the big difference we have achieved in this great project is that we are improving the quality of life of these people and realizing the dreams of people who would have liked to get a tattoo but could not do so due to pain,” says the professional.

The procedure

Fernando Ueno, anesthesiologist at the clinic, guarantees that the anesthesia does not hurt, the patient may only feel a brief discomfort while obtaining venous access.

“The rest of the anesthetic procedure is painless and after the end of the session the customer does not feel pain for the first 24-48 hours”, guarantees the specialist.

Anesthesiologist Marcus Vinicius explains that before performing the procedure a pre-anesthetic evaluation is carried out, in this case Request experts evaluate some data that can interfere with or increase the risks of anesthesia:

  • Pre-existing diseases;
  • History of diseases;
  • Control of existing diseases;
  • allergies;
  • Use of drugs.

As for the documentation needed to perform the procedure, nursing technician Dominique Eduardo says blood tests, an EKG and a consent form are needed. “Only then will the anesthesiologist assess whether the client is suitable for the tattoo.”

Procedure room

Nurses are responsible for preparing the surgical environment, checking the operation of equipment, sterilizing instruments, materials and the general conditions of the room. “It is essential that everything is flawless to minimize the risk of infections and complications during the procedure.”

During the procedure the team plays the role of assisting the professionals, providing the necessary tools, monitoring the patient’s vital signs and his position on the stretcher to avoid possible muscle and/or joint injuries.

After the procedure, professionals carefully monitor the patient as he recovers. They administer medications, monitor vital signs, and watch for any complications that may arise.

What are the risks present in the surgical center?

Experts explain that the risks in the surgical center are multiple and can lead to medical complications, infections, human errors and much more. Nitrogen professionals highlight:

Infections

The main concern is preventing infections. The nursing team is committed to ensuring adequate sterilization, the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and strict compliance with hygiene practices, with the aim of minimizing the risk of infections.

Process errors

Nursing staff play an important role in preventing process errors, such as procedures performed on the wrong patient or location, by acting as an additional layer of verification.

Adverse reactions

Nurses are trained to monitor the patient throughout the procedure and, if adverse reactions to anesthesia or other medications occur, they act immediately within the limits of their responsibilities.

Post-procedural complications.

After the operation, the nursing team together with the medical team carries out continuous surveillance of the patient, with the aim of identifying any complications as early as possible, ensuring rapid interventions if necessary.

As for the amount charged by the clinic, professionals say that the price is calculated based on the size of the work, the region of the body to be tattooed, the time taken to complete it and the complexity of the art.

Who has already done it

Artists such as Mc Cabelinho, Mc Brisola and Vulgo FK have already undergone the procedure with the team. The anesthesiologists highlight the intervention of a young man who regretted a tattoo that he had for 20 years and for this reason was unable to appear in public shirtless.

DJ Luccas Pombal also performed the technique

“After 2 attempts in the office without anesthesia or only with ointment he was unable to achieve coverage due to pain sensitivity. After having the tattoo done under anesthesia at Azoto Tattoo, he managed to do it, without pain, with better healing and he was very excited after having it done because we realized his dream of being able to remove the shirt without being ashamed of the old tattoo, that is, we can improve people’s quality of life”, recall the professionals.

Reviews

In 2023, with the popularization of the technique among tattoo artists, the Brazilian Society of Anesthesiology (SBA) advised against any type of anesthesia for tattoos. “We reiterate that the safety of anesthesia is linked to administration by a doctor specialized in anesthesiology,” the entity said.

Nitrogen doctors say they received a lot of criticism at the beginning of the project, but they have always answered all questions on the topic and respect the opinions of those who do not agree with the procedure.

“Everyone has the right not to feel pain. We value providing a humanized and safe service. The biggest fear people have is a lack of information and we are here to demystify this concept and serve our customers in the best way possible,” says the Azoto medical team.
