Hospital removes nursing technician who applied milk instead of whey to newborn in RS


The baby was born prematurely, at 29 weeks, and was about to be discharged when the medical error occurred; the hospital and the CRE investigate the case




One nursing technique it was removed after applying breast milk, instead of whey, into a newborn’s vein in a hospital in Novo Hamburgo, in the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre (RS). According to the hospital, the child is hospitalized in the intensive care unit (ICU) and his health condition is stable.

To the Record magazine, the family said the baby was born prematurely, at 29 weeks, on March 15, in VenĂ¢ncio Aires, 130 kilometers from the capital of Rio Grande do Sul. Shortly after birth, the newborn was taken to the neonatal intensive care unit.

As he was about to be discharged, however, his family was informed of the medical error. The parents were informed on April 18 that the nursing technician had applied breast milk into the baby’s vein, requiring intubation.
