Martin Corullon and Gustavo Cedroni, of METRO Arquitetos, obtain recognition from a British magazine for the Renata Building project
METRO Arquitetos is the only Brazilian firm on the list of winners of the The Monocle Design Awards 2024: Martin Corullon and Gustavo Cedroni were awarded by the British magazine Monocle in the category ” Best retrofit“for the revitalization of Palazzo Renata, in Sao Paulo. The project, carried out in collaboration with the developer Planta.Inc, sought to transform the previously commercial building into a residential one.
The Renata building is located in the heart of downtown São Paulo: on the corner of Araújo and Major Sertório streets, near Praça da República. Founded in 1956, by the hands of the modern architect from São Paulo Oswaldo Bratke (1907-1997), was reopened in 2023 by METRO. The retrofit proposes to recover the typical lifestyle of the city center: living and having fun in the same place.
With housing units from 26 to 240 m2, the building offers services on the ground floor, active from dawn to dawn, and recreational spaces on the middle floor, also accessible to the public. This diversity of programs and proposals in the same building guided all the design interventions.
During the renovation intervention, METRO’s objective was to recover the architectural typology of the center of São Paulo, offering a diversity of facilities, services and uses in a single project, maintaining the classic characteristics of the work, such as the cobogós facade.
Along with postcards like the Copan and the old Hilton Hotel, the Renata Sampaio Ferreira is part of a group of six buildings surveyed in 2012 by CONPRESP called “São Paulo Moderna“, an urban complex of great historical and architectural value in the city center.
“The renovation is a very specific challenge, but it is also a service for the city,” says Gustavo Cedroni. “The award is a great recognition for the work of redevelopment of a historic building that returns to the city, to the vibrant life of São Paulo. We are happy to represent Brazil in this list”, comments Martin Corullon, founder of METRO.
The Monocle Design Awards
The award is an initiative of monocle magazinelaunched in 2007 by Tyler Brulealso founder of background. Since then, the magazine has evolved into a 24-hour radio station, website and media brand in addition to the traditional print version, published 10 times a year. “The Monocle Design Awards highlight that beautiful, attractive and practical design can improve our homes, offices, cities and build communities,” he says Nic Monissemagazine design editor.
