Already in operation, the space has trained employees to accommodate this group; The increase in the elderly population in Brazil was one of the factors that motivated the creation of the new wing
This Tuesday 7th, the Network of São Camilo HospitalsIn St. Paulopened to first aid 60+, an exclusive space for the emergency room of people aged 60 and over. The new space, located in the Vila Pompeia unit, west of Sao Paulo, is already operational and can be accessed by all patients in this age group who have agreements covering queries to the Hospitalwithout the need for differentiated or specific coverage.
“The inauguration of this wing aims to provide more humanized and specialized care, promoting healthy and peaceful aging”, underlines in a statement Abgair Lima, administrative director of the Pompeia unit of the São Camilo de São Paulo Hospital Network.
To the EstadaoAbgair explained that the creation of the space – which is on the same floor as the conventional emergency room – was driven by the significant increase in the hospital’s elderly users, especially in the Pompeia Unit.
Another determining factor was the growth of the elderly population in general, according to 2022 census data from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), which recorded an increase of 57.4% in 12 years. It is worth mentioning that, currently, there are health plans dedicated exclusively to patients over 60, including its own hospital network, such as Prevent Senior and MedSênior, indicating a growing trend of services aimed at this age group.
According to the institution, the new wing of the Pompeia Unit has been designed with staff specially trained to welcome the elderly and speed up the hospitalization process, with the supervision of doctors geriatricians.
Additionally, the environment received a different visual environment, with light floors and no cutouts, to facilitate safe movement. The space also adopts a single-flow care system, where the patient is welcomed into an office and the professional, be it a doctor or nurse, comes to him.
«The elderly population is quite vulnerable and is often affected by chronic diseases. But, with adequate care, hospitalizations can be avoided and life expectancy increased. When it is necessary to go to the emergency room, it is important that it is an agile and decisive experience”, underlines the health manager of the Pompeia Unit, Carolina Marcki.
