“Hiding my disability was one of the most exhausting things I’ve ever done. But I’m very excited to start my new life. People probably look at me and think: ‘blonde model who doesn’t have any difficulties’. But I want to show that disability has no appearance,” she said in an interview with Daily email.
To reveal the deficiency, Meacham said she was inspired by two UK actresses: “23% of women in the UK are disabled, according to the Women’s Budget Group. We need more representation in the media. I look at celebrities like Tasha Ghouri and Rose Ayling-Ellis and feel like I want to be as confident as them.
As well as being a model, the Londoner is also an actress, having acted Bridget Jones’s baby AND Wonder Woman 1984. The recordings, in fact, were a major obstacle for Meacham, who always needed to read lips.
“I went to jets with her hair down. I was in total denial. I had to guess what was said on set. It was mentally exhausting to read lips all the time. Deaf people suffer from something called ‘deafness fatigue’ because it takes more brain power to hear what people are saying,” explained the Englishman.
Although she hid her deafness throughout her career, the model said she coped well with the disability during her childhood. She started using hearing aids when she was 1 year and 5 months old.
“I was very confident at school. I have never suffered bullying because of my deafness. I couldn’t hide either [aparelhos auditivos]I had to wear my hair up,” the actress recalled.
The motivation to hide the condition, however, came with her entry into the world of fashion at the age of 18.
“Modeling has become a new chapter in my life. I thought hiding my hearing aids would make me a more successful model. I went to jets with her hair down,” Meacham added.
