“Joca Law”: the transport of animals in the airplane cabin approved in the Chamber

The case of the golden retriever handed over dead to his owner has sparked great social mobilization and the fight to change airline regulations

The death of the Golden Retriever dog Play generated a national mobilization. The dog did not survive after spending 8 hours in the baggage compartment following an error on the Gol Linhas Aéreas flight. Joca thus became the symbol of a struggle that united the population and the authorities. The goal, therefore, is to make the airlines understand the animal is not an object.

“Joca, who, treated like luggage, like a suitcase, traveled for hours and hours until he was forgotten and killed. Would any of us here be able to face the journey like luggage, without water, food and at the mercy of the cold and Heat? “, – asked the deputy speaker Fred Costa (PRD-MG).

The “Joca Law” was approved in the Chamber.

The Chamber of Deputies has approved the bill which requires airlines that offer the transport service of dogs and cats to place them in the passenger cabin of domestic flights.

The deputy Alencar Santana (PT-SP), author of the PL, stated that the approval in plenary “It demonstrates great sensitivity on the part of Parliament and an evolution of society in guaranteeing animal rights”.

The House-passed bill also forces companies to offer pet tracking services. Therefore monitoring must take place throughout the entire process, until delivery to the guardian.

Furthermore, a veterinarian must monitor all procedures relating to the boarding, placement and disembarkation of animals at airports that transport over 600 thousand passengers per year. The text now passes to the Senate for examination.
