A study conducted by researchers at Neurobiology and Dementia Group of the Sant Pau Research Institutein Barcelona, Spain, presents discoveries related to the development of Alzheimer’s. The research was quite thorough. It initially analyzed more than 10,000 patient samples across Europe, along with around 3,300 brain studies, and subsequently identified a crucial link to the gene Apoe4.
The results revealed that 95% of homozygous adults, those who have identical pairs of the gene, aged 65 or older and diagnosed with the disease, carried two copies of the gene Apoe4. Furthermore, in 75% of cases analyzed with the amyloid PET test, used to detect protein plaques beta-amyloid Genetic variants have also been found associated with the condition.

Published in the magazine Nature’s medicine, the study highlights that approximately 2-3% of the world population carries this genetic predisposition. Previously, the presence of this gene had been recognized as a risk factor for the development of Alzheimer’s. However, the discovery that the presence of two copies of the gene indicates not only an increased risk but also an earlier development of the disease is particularly alarming.

Juan Forteafirst author of the study and director of the Memory Unit of the Neurology Service of the Catalão Institute, underlined: “We now know that almost all individuals who carry two copies of this gene experience symptoms of Alzheimer’s.” This discovery raises the possibility that genetic testing could play a key role in the early diagnosis of neurodegenerative diseases in the future.
“This means that a large portion of the population, up to 3%, has a variant that is close to the inherited genetic version that accounts for about 10% of all Alzheimer’s cases, not just a risk factor for the disease,” concludes the doctor.
