Keloid: find out what it is, what the causes are and how to treat it

Genetic predisposition can develop the condition, but poorly stitched wounds are more likely

Few symptoms warn of the formation of a keloid: itching, pain or burning sensation around the scar are some of them. Generally, everything happens quietly and during the healing period of the skin after a surgical cut, ear piercing or vaccine marks.

“Normally, keloids have a genetic predisposition, but there are some exceptions, such as poorly sutured wounds, which are more likely to evolve into this type of scar. It is worth noting that this is a benign change and, therefore , does not present any type of health risk. However, despite the genetic predisposition, it is possible to know whether the patient will have the keloid or not only after the scar has already been created, since there is no type of prevention”, he explains. plastic surgeon Ana Roxo.

What is a keloid?

According to the Ministry of Health (MS), we call the abnormal growth of the “keloid”. scar tissue formed at the site of a cut or wound. This anomaly is due to excess collagen in the skin during this process, and although this association is rarely made, it is also a scar, different in that it is located above the wound, is elevated and thick.

The lower limbs and ears tend to be the areas most affected by keloids.

Regions of the body and ethnicities that are more likely to have keloids

The areas most likely to develop this excess scar tissue are the central region of the chest and some areas of the lower extremities. However, there are cases of people who have developed the condition in other places, such as in ears. Likewise, keloids are more common in individuals with greater skin pigmentation, such as blacks or Asians, and affect both men and women, but are more common in women.

Dr. Ana Roxo points out that while there is no cure, there is a treatment with considerable results. “There are some treatments that have been used in medicine, such as corticosteroid therapy within the scar to beta therapy, which is a radiotherapy low frequency. The treatment will be decided through the evaluation of the patient, but in any case the cause will not influence which to follow, “she concludes.
