A university in Vermont, United States, awarded the honorary title of “doctor in litter-ature” (a play on the word litter-box, in English) to Max the Cat, a beloved member of its community, before graduation of students this Saturday, 18.

Vermont State University’s Castleton campus honors the feline not for his mouse-catching skills or his naps, but for his friendship.

“Max the Cat has been a loving member of the Castleton family for years,” the university said in a Facebook post. The popular cat lives in a house with his human family on the street leading to the main entrance of the campus. “So he decided to come to campus and started hanging out with the college students, and they love him,” owner Ashley Dow said Thursday.

“I don’t even know how he knows how to go, but he goes,” Dow said. “And then he follows them on tour.” Students refer to Dow as Max’s mother, and graduates returning to town sometimes ask how Max is doing. However, Max will not be attending graduation. His diploma will be presented to Dow later.
