History of the Central Market of Fortaleza

The first version of the shopping center opened in 1809 to sell meat, fruit and vegetables in a wooden building on Rua Conde D’Eu, where the Centro Cultural Banco do Nordeste is located today.

The wooden structure did not last long and was demolished five years later to make way for a building. Already in 1931 the trade in meat, fruit and vegetables was banned and therefore new products, such as handicrafts, began to be sold.

In the 1970s, new stages were built and the market was reopened, still in Rua Conde D’Eu.

The almost 10 thousand square meter building at the current address – Avenida Alberto Nepomuceno – was inaugurated only on January 19, 1998.

The building project was designed by architect Luiz Fiúza

The facade of Central Market It has an arch reminiscent of the entrance to a football stadium. Inside the architecture is equally interesting, with ramps connecting the different floors and forming a network of paths in the center of the building. Renovation work will begin in May and is expected to last 12 months.
