The largest aquarium in South America brings together more than 350 species, including those at risk of extinction, and offers environmental education activities
The name itself is Rio de Janeiro Marine Aquarium, but for those close to you, you can simply call it AquaRio, pun included. Inaugurated in 2016 in the Gamboa neighborhood of the Píer Mauá region, the structure is the largest of its kind in South America.
In an area of 26 thousand square meters in which 28 tanks are distributed, the structure gives the possibility of discovering 350 different species that populate the oceans.
Around 10,000 animals are currently on display, including a wide variety of fish, sharks and even seahorse specimens that only exist on the Brazilian coast and are now at risk of extinction.
In addition to the views of the various pools, the highlight is the Acquarium it’s called Recinto Oceânico, popular Tank. Seven meters high and featuring a transparent tunnel, the space holds 3.5 million liters of water and is a big hit with children, but also impresses adults.
AquaRio also offers educational activities
With a structure reminiscent of the best aquariums in the world, the Acquarium It is also a good choice for excursions for educational purposes. The place offers guided tours for schools, in groups of 35 students accompanied by the teacher, as well as the aquarium guide.
In addition to welcoming students, the facility also has collaborations with the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) and the Federal University Fluminense (UFF) to develop marine life conservation projects.
