Dengue: Immunization rate is still low

Dengue: Immunization rate is still low

Understand some reasons that might explain the low demand for vaccine

Why are few people vaccinated? Distributed since February, in the first 40 days of vaccination against dengue fever, only 30% of the doses made available by the SUS (Unified Health System) were applied. Why?

Fake news about vaccination, logistical difficulties as young people must receive two doses three months apart, and parents and guardians’ poor risk perception regarding dengue.

This is a problem, since in Brazil about one in 125 cases of the disease can become serious, according to the Ministry of Health. For the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the United States, this number is even higher: one in 20 cases can develop poorly.

The good news is that the Butantan Institute, in Sao Paulo, is working on a new vaccine that has been in development for 10 years and has reached the final stage of research. The vaccine includes the four subtypes of the virus and is almost 80% effective with a single dose.
