- Close your eyes and count to 30;
- Then, open your eyes slightly, so that only part of them is open in the shape of a crescent;
- Count to 5 with your eyes slightly open;
- Close your eyes completely again and count to 30;
- Open your eyes halfway again and count to 5;
- Close your eyes once again and focus on your breathing;
- Breathe in and out slowly through your nose and you should fall asleep.
In an interview with the publication BustleShelby Harris, a licensed clinical psychologist and director of Sleep Health at Sleepopolis, said the technique is legitimate. “It uses a series of eye movements combined with mental relaxation tactics that increase alpha brain wave activity. These waves are important for calming the mind and facilitating the transition to sleep,” she explains.
The goal of the hack is to stimulate these brain waves by simulating sleepy eye movements so you feel relaxed enough to fall asleep. “This technique helps stimulate the generation of alpha waves, which are integral to relaxation and drowsiness. Alternating eye movements can guide the brain from attentive beta waves to calmer alpha waves, making it easier to fall asleep,” the expert said.
However, if you suffer from insomnia, the technique may not work perfectly at first. The method works best for people who occasionally have difficulty falling asleep. If the suggestion doesn’t work on the first try, give it another chance.
