Spotify’s Global Fan Study reveals how users discover new music and interact with their favorite artists
Fans are everything and that’s what the global study shows fan studiofrom Spotify for artists, a quarterly review of fan behavior around the world. With each edition, millions of data are analyzed and new insights are revealed.
This year’s latest data reveals how music is going further and further and how artists around the world are breaking down barriers and crossing borders. All this due to an increasingly global fan base.
While you might think that most new fans come close, for example, the data tells a very different story: 64% of an artist’s monthly listeners are fans outside their home country. In addition, fan activities directly contribute to the artist’s success: saving tracks and adding them to personal playlists, for example, has a direct impact on future streams.
Check out 6 behavioral tidbits from Spotify’s fan study on fans in music:
- On average, users around the world listen to artists from 14 different countries every month. Users from Latin America, the United States and Canada are part of this average; but for European listeners, that number reaches 16 countries per month; while for listeners from the Middle East and Africa, the number drops to 12 and from Asia-Pacific to 11 countries per month. (Based on global listeners with 10+ monthly streams and artists with 1,000+ monthly listeners, Jan 4-31, 2022)
-
On average, 66% of discoveries by new artists take place outside the artist’s country of origin and when this happens, their involvement is very high: 62% save songs, 63% add the artist’s songs to their playlist. (Based on how fans interacted with artists who have at least 1,000 monthly listeners, between Jan 4 and Jan 31, 2022.)
-
When a listener saves a track, it shows that they want to hear that song again. And not just in a few days or weeks, but in months. For example, 6 months after saving a track, a fan listens to their favorite artist’s songs 3 times more often than before. (Based on data collected from July 2018 to March 2020).
-
When a fan adds a song to a personal playlist, the song’s streams increase by 41% and the frequency of visits to the artist’s profile for that song by 12%. (Based on January 2021 data).
-
On average, the richest 5% of fans listen 6 times more than the rest of the audience. The best fans of religious, classical, rock, Latin and hip hop music outnumber this average, as seen in the table below. (Based on January 2021 data).
-
Artists start with national fan bases and then expand to other parts of the world. In the first year of launch on Spotify, an artist’s new followers come from the same country as the artist, but after five years that number changes: 57% of artists have a greater growth in followers from abroad. (Based on new followers for artists with at least 1,000 monthly listeners, January 4 – 31, 2022)
