The doctor teaches preventive measures against autumn and winter diseases

Getting the vaccine and avoiding temperature changes are among the essential measures to avoid autumn and winter evils

The arrival of autumn and winter brings with it a drop in temperatures. And, with this, the increase in cases of influenza and other respiratory diseases. This is because the climatic conditions typical of these seasons contribute to the proliferation of viruses and bacteria, as well as weakening the immune system.

A study published in 2022 in The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology showed that if the temperature inside the nose drops 5°C, almost 50% of defense cells die. In other words, a person’s immunity can be reduced practically by half.

“Every organism feels the changes, but individuals with a weakened or weaker immunity, such as those with respiratory allergies or asthma, feel them even more,” emphasizes Francisco Antônio Fernandes, nephrologist and coordinator of the emergency room at Amhemed hospital.

The doctor also explains that it is in autumn and winter that respiratory viruses are most widespread in the air. “It is therefore a challenge to differentiate influenza from other respiratory diseases, such as the common cold or Covid-19. All these viruses have a very similar situation: they are self-limited, that is, they have a time for beginning and end,” says The specialist.

Furthermore, the symptoms are also very similar. Typically, patients present with sore throat, headache, muscle pain, fever, cough and sputum.

Influenza vaccination is a crucial measure to reduce the impact of this disease, especially among risk groups. “In particular, in the elderly, pregnant women and children, as well as in immunosuppressed groups. Immunizers favor contact between the virus and the body, which naturally favors defense through antibodies, preventing serious symptoms of the disease”, says Francisco.

In addition to vaccination, the doctor highlights other simple preventive measures that can reduce the risk of contracting the flu. “Basically, dress well and pay attention to temperature changes, such as when you leave a hot shower in a cold environment. Also, hydrate well and maintain a good diet,” she advises.

Another measure is knowing when to seek medical attention. The doctor advises that it is important to consult a specialist in case of persistent and particularly high fever, equal to 39°C, intense cough, especially with yellow or green secretions. “Tiredness and loss of appetite are also warning signs,” he advises.

According to him, these symptoms indicate that the flu could evolve into a more serious condition, such as pneumonia, which also includes other factors. “Frontal headache, which may indicate sinusitis, or even cough with intense sputum, which may sometimes contain blood, which may indicate bacterial pneumonia as a complication of a viral condition,” emphasizes the medical specialist at Amhemed hospital.

Finally, avoiding crowds, washing your hands frequently and using humidifiers are also allies in the prevention of these diseases, ensuring health and well-being at this time of year.
