In the weeks leading up to the Paris Games, Netflix is creating an event with Sous la Seine, a French horror film featuring sharks in the capital’s waters. Crazy Square is one of the reasons for the significant worldwide success of the feature film – it is in the top ten in 93 countries.
There is an inspiration behind this concept. And no, it’s not Steven Spielberg’s classic Jaws, which keeps many vacationers from sinking. To introduce the film, director Xavier Gens turned to Adam McKay’s Don’t Look Up, which hits Netflix in late 2021.
This comedy starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence took a satirical look at politics, the media and climate skeptics. Sous la Seine also offers ecological reading. in the given interview varietyXavier Gens explains:
“The idea was to use the reactions of the French public and politicians to create a caricature. What’s funny is that all the dialogue in the movie is taken from real speeches and comments from various political figures like Ana Hidalgo and Valerie Pecres..”
Caricature of political figures
Since the release of the film, the resemblance between the character played by Anna Marivin – who plays the mayor of Paris – and the two female politicians has not gone unnoticed. Just like the president played by Meryl Streep in the movie “Don’t Look Up” has a lot in common with Donald Trump.
“We changed the context of these responses, continues Xavier Gens. We made fun of it all, but in some cases we didn’t even need to caricature them. It was fun to invent an alternate reality that highlights the stupidity of humans making the worst decisions.”
