Before or after the interactive show, children can play in the green area with slide and climbing wall
Unprecedented in Brazil, the exhibition “Darwin, The Original” is an immersion in the mind and imagination of Charles Darwin, the British naturalist who wrote the book “The Origin of Species” and developed the Theory of Evolution. Until 11 December, the show will be on display at Sesc Interlagos, in the South Zone of Sao Paulo, where several interactive stations have been installed that explore the author beyond naturalism, showing his facets as a biologist, father, humanist, antislaver and pioneer of animal and human ethology. Admission is free.

There are eight thematic cores made up of films, multimedia devices and games. The first theme, ” Darwin and his time“, it focuses on the historical, intellectual and cultural context of the Victorian society in which the scientist lived. Hence,” Around the world in 1741 days“boasts one of the highlights of the exhibition: the model of the ship HMS Beagle, used in his expeditions as a naturalist. There it is also possible to glimpse what the scientist’s library was like, which was inside the ship and had more than 400 titles, and the other activities that he carried out on board by him.

At the station ” stairs“, interactive elements alter temporal reference points and notions of scale so that the visitor understands the basics of the scholar’s thought. the Darwinian revolution” And ” The reception of Darwin’s ideas“The arguments used by the scientist in his works, respectively, and how these ideas have been represented in the arts and media are presented. The legacy of this science is also explored in another section, called” The science of evolution today“.

” Darwin in intimacy“shows curiosities and relevant facts from the naturalist’s biography in three small animated theaters. One of these uses graphic elements of the 19th century, set in motion, to recreate scenes from his family life. Another shows the scientist’s reaction to situations of slavery. And the third explores the multiplicity of scientific tasks that Darwin undertook when he fell ill. The last thematic area, finally, is named ” Darwin and Brazil“and rethinks Darwin’s work by drawing parallels with national scientific production.
During the month of July, Sesc Interlagos will also screen films on the evolution of species, science and nature, always in dialogue with the Darwinian theme. The program can be checked on the website.
To know the work of Charles Darwin directly from the source, it was the book The origin of the species who introduced the theory of evolution to the world. Anyone interested in learning more about the history of the British, Darwin: The life of a troubled evolutionist by Adrian Desmond is the most complete biography. If the 749 pages scare you, the book Darwin’s Darwin: An Overview of His Life and Work Through His Writings by Janet Browne is a collection of quotes by the scientist himself, taken from letters to friends and personal notes.
