Phenol peel: Searches for the procedure skyrocket on Google, but it requires attention

The Federal Council of Medicine (FMC) claims that only doctors with specialization in dermatology are qualified to carry out the procedure

After the death of the businessman Henrique Silva Chagas, 27, searches for phenol peels have skyrocketed on Google. Henrique died after performing the procedure in a beauty clinic in São Paulo. Google Trends data shows that there has never been so much research on the topic.

What is phenol peeling?

According to Doctor Tálita Eufemiadoctor and trichologist, the procedure involves applying chemicals to the skin. “This is precisely why it is classified as chemical peeling. It thus reaches the deepest dermis of the skin, promoting cell renewal through peeling, thus promising rejuvenation.”

What should the patient check before undergoing treatment?

Doctor Thálita explains that treatment must begin even before the operation, with tests and preventive clinical evaluation by a doctor.

“These measures are essential to evaluate whether there actually is an indication for this type of therapy, the general condition of the patient and possible contraindications to the procedure. Explanations about the treatment, possible complications and adverse effects, as well as aftercare – the procedures are also explained before peeling occurs”.

The expert warns that it is important to observe the place where the technique is performed: “it must take place in a clinical-hospital environment, capable of welcoming the patient in cases of urgency, emergency and reaction”.

As this is a complex medical procedure, it can pose health risks. “Phenol peeling can have a cardiotoxic effect, causing for example cardiac arrhythmias and even cardiac arrest. Since it can also have a nephrotoxic effect, especially in patients who already have kidney problems, the procedure can lead to kidney failure, among other possible negative effects”.

The aftermath of the businessman’s death has given rise to debate over who is qualified to carry out the procedure. It is also necessary to verify the professional’s academic training. Finally, a warning: Dr. Thálita emphasizes that only a doctor should carry out this type of treatment, under constant clinical monitoring. “Inspection by regulatory bodies in Brazil is essential to minimize the incidence of unaccredited environments and professionals offering aesthetic treatments”he concludes.
