Check out a step-by-step guide to learn and start doing Yoga at home or in a studio
The day June 21st is declared by the United Nations as the International Yoga Day. The intention is to bring to more people the benefits of this simple, accessible and, at the same time, powerful practice to rebalance body and mind. To celebrate the date, we have prepared a step-by-step guide for anyone who wants to start doing Yoga.
OR International Yoga Day was chosen in conjunction with the Summer solstice in the Northern Hemisphere (Winter solstice here in the southern part of the planet). But, in 2024, the Solstice occurred earlier, on the 20th.
However, this Friday, the 21st, we have a Super special Full Moonwith energy of personal and emotional maturity.
According to the instructor Rosina Mellofrom the point of view of Yoga, the Solstice marks the transition to Dakshinayana (six-month period between the summer and winter solstices).
It is also considered a special date, in which the energy of the planet is favorable for spiritual practices. How about taking advantage of this moment to start doing Yoga? See tips below!
How to start doing Yoga
Over the past few decades and especially during the pandemic, with the increased availability of online classes, interest in Yoga has skyrocketed. Even so, many Brazilians have not yet tried this practice. If you are one of them, here’s what you need to know to start doing Yoga.
We’ve assembled a team of Personare experts to provide tips and step-by-step instructions for you to start practicing Yoga today.
Step 1: Choose the Yoga line
Yoga has evolved over the centuries and has been adapted by different cultures and traditions. So, research types of Yoga (check here) and see which one interests you the most. It is good to take into account, for example, whether you prefer the more intense ones from a physical point of view or the lighter ones.
If you don’t know where to start, one piece of advice is to do it Hatha Yoga. This system is one of the most practiced in the world and consists of performing postures (asanas), breathing (pranayama) and meditation.
Step 2: Choose between online or in-person classes
Do you prefer to practice without leaving home or do you like going to a Yoga studio? This decision is essential before moving to the next step. Both practices are valid and have the same advantages.
Step 3: Choose your instructor
Once you’ve chosen your line and format, look for certified instructors. Here on Personare you will find online Yoga lessons, individually or in a group.
Get in touch with your chosen professional, ask any questions and, if possible, book a trial lesson to see if it is really what you are looking for. You can test one class online and another in person, for example.
Step 4: Provide accessories
To start the practice you only need comfortable clothes and a small mat, also known as a “mat”. You can see tips for choosing your yoga mat here.
Some lineages use so-called “props”, which are supports for practices, such as pillows, blankets, blocks, belts or small weights. They bring comfort, creating more space and stability.
Step 5: Try it
In this guide you will discover how to do yoga at home with some recorded video exercises to do at home and try. It’s also there every Tuesday at 8am Free online yoga on Personare social networks.
Step 6: Relax and enjoy the practice
One of the biggest obstacles in relation to Yoga is fear. Fear of not being able to perform asanas (postures) or of feeling pain. But the idea is to relax into the discomfort, to surrender. Confronting the pain and its limitations is part of the process.
Practicing Yoga really helps us listen to our body. With each posture, with each practice, you will be able to exercise this more delicate gaze on yourself, paying deeper attention to your interiority.
Over time the practice becomes a lifestyle, a philosophy.
