Dengue: Expired vaccines must be sent to other cities or administered to people aged 4 to 59

The Ministry of Health reported that dengue vaccine doses that expire in June and July should be moved to cities or used to broaden the age range served. According to the ministry’s technical note, this is a “temporary strategy”.

The guidelines are as follows:

• States that have municipalities that have not yet received the vaccine should, preferably, transfer doses close to expiring to these territories;
• In states where all cities have been covered, doses can be applied to all people between the ages of 6 and 16 – this is the age range recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) for the Qdenga vaccine from Takeda, which is applied in the country;
• If necessary, expand the vaccination age range from 4 to 59 years, according to the vaccine information leaflet in Brazil.

The ministry underlines that it is necessary to inform the strategy defined by the federation bodies, to guarantee the second dose to these people.

The file states that he purchased all the doses offered by the Japanese pharmaceutical company, but since there are limitations, it was decided that, this year, Only children aged 10 to 14 from 521 municipalities would be vaccinated. According to the Ministry, within the range indicated by the WHO, this group concentrates the greatest number of hospitalizations.
