Data from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics, IBGE, reveal that more than 5.4 million Brazilians live with herniated discs every day. And what not everyone knows is that in 97% of cases of this disease it is possible to resort to specialized and non-surgical treatments, through physiotherapy and individualized care.
Considered a multifactorial condition, there are several causes for the appearance of a hernia. According to André Pêgas, physiotherapist in charge of the Doutor Hérnia clinic network, some of them can be ergonomic, such as having an inadequate posture when sitting, often lying on sofas instead of beds, standing for long periods, among other mannerisms.
“There are also genetic factors that influence it, as some people have more fragile and sensitive spinal discs than others,” he says.
Other related reasons may include low water intake during the day, excess inflammatory foods in the diet, and high levels of stress, which slow down the body’s healing process.
What’s behind the hernia?
Herniated disc is a disease that affects the intervertebral discs located in the spine. They work as shock absorbers to prevent internal wear and there is some sort of gelatinous filling inside.
When a herniation occurs, the discs end up getting damaged and torn, which allows this filling to leak out and press directly on the nerves, generating pain and related symptoms.
Commonly, this condition may appear in the neck or lower back region, causing pain, stiffness, tingling, and loss of strength in that area, and may also radiate these symptoms to other parts of the body, such as the arms and legs.
To diagnose a herniated disc, Pêgas explains that a clinical diagnosis is first made, through evaluations and anamnesis.
“Then tests are done to find out if the patient has a family history or a predisposition to having this condition. Depending on the severity of the disease, imaging tests may be required,” he explains.
Is surgery always necessary?
Contrary to popular belief, there are several non-surgical treatments available for herniated discs.
“Surgery will only be indicated when the patient presents symptoms such as paralysis of the movements of the feet or hands, cushioning of the perineum, which is the area below the waist, resulting from compression of the spinal cord. But this corresponds to only 3% of cases of the disease,” emphasizes André Pêgas.
Furthermore, rather than treating the hernia, it is important to prevent it from appearing or worsening. To achieve this goal, it is essential to follow the instructions of healthcare professionals, avoid accidents such as slips, falls and traumas, not overload the affected area with sudden physical movements and follow healthy habits, such as a balanced diet, daily hydration and adequate hydration. . physical activities for the good of each patient.
“Posture is also important. Standing, sitting or lying correctly, on a suitable mattress, can help in prevention. Exercises that strengthen the muscles are also recommended, such as pilates, water aerobics and functional training”, concludes the physiotherapist
