In a viral video on TikTok, Lara Brandão Tironi spoke about the risks of incorrect contact lens use after losing sight in her right eye due to lack of treatment; experts explain errors and precautions
Student Lara Brandão Tironi, 18, went viral on TikTok this week when she reported in a video that she had lost the sight in her right eye due to the incorrect use of contact lenses. The young woman explained that she had contracted amoebic keratitissevere infection of the cornea caused by the protozoan Acanthamoebafound in the water. On social media, he warns about the mistakes that led to this situation, such as scratching his eyes and showering with contact lenses.
“It was not the brand’s fault or the place I bought it from (the lenses). It was completely my fault. It was irresponsible. I scratched my eyes. This caused a tear on my cornea. And I even showered with contact lenses,” Lara explained. However, many other actions can put your eye health at risk, including leading to blindness. Understand what they are and what care is needed with contact lenses.
What is amoebic keratitis?
Amoebic keratitis is a rare infection caused by species of Acanthamoeba, a type of amoeba. Dr. Ione Alexim, ophthalmologist at Alemão Oswaldo Cruz Hospital, explains that these are protozoa common in humid environments, especially in places with water. Typically, infected people are people who wear contact lenses, and to avoid this, they should not wear lenses while swimming, in the bathtub or showering.
“This protozoan has a significant aggressive potential and can attack the essential visual cells of affected patients,” says the ophthalmologist. He explains that keratitis generally occurs when there is an opening in the patient’s cornea, that is, a bruise or scratch, which can be caused by the use of contact lenses or by local trauma, such as a scratch to the eye. These lesions facilitate the entry of infectious agents.
Is wearing contact lenses dangerous?
Luiz Brito, an ophthalmologist at the Hospital de Olhos de São Paulo, explains that, in addition to amoebic keratitis, which is rarer, the main problems that can arise with inappropriate use of lenses are corneal lesions, allergic and infectious conjunctivitis, as well as ulcers, which can lead to the need for urgent corneal transplants or even complete loss of vision.
But that doesn’t mean wearing contact lenses is necessarily dangerous. According to Brito, the user can be at risk if they don’t fit their lenses properly with an eye doctor or if they don’t maintain proper hygiene.
“Contact lenses alter the physiology of the ocular surface and the cornea, facilitating any type of infection,” he explains.
However, following the recommendations, the use of lenses will be safe, according to Ione. “It is not dangerous to wear contact lenses as long as you follow the ophthalmologist’s instructions correctly,” adds the doctor from Hospital Alemão Oswaldo Cruz.

How to take care of contact lenses?
Experts explain that some key recommendations are:
- Wash your hands thoroughly before and after handling any material that comes into contact with your eyes, including eye drops, contact lenses, or glasses;
- Use cleaning solutions suitable for contact lenses and not saline solutions or other substances;
- Respect the recommended wearing time – maximum eight hours a day – and the correct time for disposing of the lenses. Some are for daily use, others monthly or yearly;
- Do not use inappropriate quality and unknown brands or purchase the product without consulting a doctor;
- Don’t scratch your eyes.
In addition, the Brazilian Society of Ophthalmology (SBO) lists other important rules for the correct use of contact lenses:
- Give preference to contact lenses with daily change;
- Never go into a pool, sea, river or bathroom with contact lenses. But if this happens, ignore it immediately;
- Have eyeglasses to use alternatively to lenses. Your eyes really appreciate a break from lenses;
- Never sleep with contact lenses. When we sleep, our eyes have less oxygen, making them more susceptible to infections;
- Contact a trusted ophthalmologist if you experience warning signs such as discomfort, worsening of vision or redness of the eyes;
- Keep your eye lubricated. Not all lubricating eye drops can be used when wearing contact lenses. Ask your eye doctor to prescribe a suitable lubricating eye drop.
After the experience, to warn people about the risks and necessary care, TikToker Lara Brandão Tironi says: “If you want to wear lenses, listen to what your doctor tells you and follow exactly what he says. If you think you can do it, If you can’t do it, you are not a hygienic person, do not wear contact lenses”, she emphasizes.
