We tested the tip to seal the pan so that it is non-stick.

In non-stick pans they are a success and no less. In addition to reducing the amount of fat needed to prepare food, they are easier to wash than aluminum or iron ones, for example.
This is thanks to the Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) polymer coating, better known as Teflon, which adds practicality (and a touch of beauty, of course) to the pieces coated with it.
Even if you have recently purchased or are considering buying cookware with Teflon, know that a “cure” process. can help prolong their non-stick function. We have an article detailing this – for you to read.
However, the truth is, not everyone has non-stick cookware. Or at least it still retains the traditional iron or aluminum pots that inevitably stick to food. But is it really inevitable?
Viral: how to ‘seal’ the pan with an onion
A piece of advice that came out on the internet suggests that it is possible to “seal” the bottom of a pan with an ingredient we usually have at home: onion. Instagram user Estephanie Muncinelli shared a video on her profile in which she appears “sealing” a pan with onions.
The advice is to heat the pan for 15 minutes, fry half an onion until it burns, then discard it. The next step is to add 2 cups of water to the pan, discard this too, and pat dry with a paper towel. At this point the pan would be “sealed” with a non-stick bottom.
In the video, Estephanie fries a crepioca and shows that, in fact, she did not stick to the pan.

Since a good tip is a tested tip, we discovered: Works?
Test the “onion technique” so that the aluminum pan does not stick
It is worth mentioning that two points in this tip already bother us:
- the time with the cooking gas (15 minutes just to heat the pan);
- and the waste of onions – a subject to which we will return shortly.
But as good top testers that we are, we went all the way to put the tip to the test.
Let’s start by slicing half an onion, as the tip suggests.

We chose an aluminum pan, precisely because it does not have the non-stick function. And we put it on the fire for 10 minutes.

We add a generous amount of oil (well more than a drizzle) and fry the onion until it burns.

The burnt onion was removed, as was the oil. 2 cups of water were added to the pan, also discarded in sequence. Then, dry with a paper towel.

Only then will the pot be ready for cooking. We fry 2 eggs to test – at this stage there is no need to add any more oil.

And surprisingly, it worked well. At least with the first egg.

In fact, it froze a bit, but it can be said that it worked.

So we tried to fry another egg in the sequence and we couldn’t. He blocked everything!

And the pan was still all black, with the rest of the burnt egg stuck to the bottom.
Here is a comparison: the egg on the left is the second egg and the one on the right is the first.

Result: Does “sealing” the pan with onions really work?
If you want to take all this hassle to fry just 1 egg (or make a crepioca unit, like in the original video) you can say yes.
But is it valid? our answer is No.
The suggestion author herself commented our Instagram video talking about his impressions after recording the makeup:
“Guys, this video resonated more than I imagined. I was actually testing it too! I made a few stories saying that I could never do a crepio without sticking and I got a video with the tip, I decided to play it and it exploded. PS: even in my pan it did not last long“, commented Stefania,
On social media, our followers have also questioned the cost-effectiveness of the makeup.
“With the price of gas, it is more profitable to invest in a non-stick pan“Mari Gurtler commented on TikTok.
As mentioned earlier, we were also bothered by the fact of discarding the burnt onion. So, several followers gave suggestions for using it:
“With burnt onion you can sauté the chicken, add a little water and it turns brown and has no burnt taste“, taught Rayssa Guimarães also on TikTok.
Also, a highly recommended tip was to use the burnt onion to make a farofa, or even incorporate it into an omelette.
After all, how to prevent food from sticking to the pan?
If the concern is to prevent the egg from sticking, the SOS Almanac There is a much more practical and quick tip that doesn’t waste a lot of gas: a pinch of wheat flour.
That’s right, adding a pinch of wheat flour (corn starch or even corn flour if you have celiac disease) to the fat will prevent it from splashing and the egg from sticking.
What you need to know about this tip
- Sealing the pan with onion works only for 1st use;
- Due to the waste of gas, it is not worth practicing the tip;
- Do not discard the onion: use it to color the chicken or to make crumbs;
- A valid alternative: just add a pinch of wheat flour to the fat.
