Innovation: Lessons from Around the World

Innovation: Lessons from Around the World

How to be innovative in a sector marked by tradition? Looking for references in other segments and countries is one way to expand your horizons.

My name is Thiago SodréI am the CEO of Club&Casa Design, the largest relationship platform on the Arq&Decor market and I am excited to share with you insights and experiences on innovationa topic that I consider vital for the growth and evolution of our sector.

Innovating for Arq&Decor is not just an option, but a necessity to remain relevant and competitive in a constantly changing market. I hope the experiences shared here inspire you to explore new frontiers and adopt an open mindset to change.

To start this column, I would like to share what I have learned from immersions in Silicon Valley, Israel, and China. It all started in 2016, when I decided to challenge myself and step out of my comfort zone as an entrepreneur. My first international immersion was in Silicon Valley, where I spent ten days learning about companies like Tesla, Google, and LinkedIn.

The main insight from this experience was the importance of changing mentality. I saw how people were willing to collaborate on new projects and how enhancing teams is essential. This experience was so strong that, in 2018, I took around 50 professional Club&Casa partners on an immersion in Silicon Valley.

In 2017, I traveled to Israel with a group of 12 entrepreneurs and CEOs, inspired by the book “Entrepreneurial Nation.” For ten days, we visited venture capital funds, startups, and universities, discussing innovation. Israel, with its history of survival and scarcity, is the most entrepreneurial country in the world per capita.

During this immersion I learned that resilience is key. There, failures are seen as learning opportunities. They understand that persistence without adaptation is not effective. The concept of “glocal” was also enlightening: thinking globally and at the same time acting locally is crucial for small markets that need to expand their innovations globally.

In 2018, I traveled to China, focused on understanding its technological progress. I had access to blockchain, fintech, and financial technology movements. The determination and lack of ego of the Chinese was impressive. They base their decisions on precise analysis and indicators, always striving for high performance. The Chinese methodology of using data to predict and achieve results was a valuable lesson that I took with me.

The combination of lessons from Silicon Valley, Israel and China helped lay the foundation for the entrepreneur I am today. My activities combine Silicon Valley creativity and mindset change, Israeli resilience and Chinese analytical depth.

An analogy: to be someone different, you need to know how far you can go and what are the main pillars that people expect from your performance. This is my theory, my methodology. I believe in transformation. With these points it is possible to understand the VUCA world [em português, VICA, ou seja, volatilidade, incerteza, complexidade e ambiguidade]that we live in now. To face all this you need to have an open mind, be resilient and research data.

North American thinker Alvin Toffler states that “the illiterates of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn and relearn”.

By adopting a mindset of openness to change, embracing resilience as an ally, and making intelligent use of robust data, we can transform our businesses and drive growth in the industry as a whole. The concepts of creativity, resilience and strategic analysis know no borders and can be applied in any business context.

Therefore, I invite you, dear reader, to reflect on the experiences shared here and consider how these principles can be integrated into your entrepreneurial journey. May we all pursue innovation with enthusiasm and determination, creating a future where excellence and creativity are the pillars of success.

This first article was designed to introduce you and bring relevant insights on innovation based on international experiences that have transformed my way of thinking, managing and positioning myself on the market.

In the next column we will delve into more technical, but practical, topics on innovation in Arq&Decor.

If you think our market is still highly traditional, come with me and I will prove otherwise.
