Santos Municipal School Closes Due to Increase in Human Scabies Cases

Students and teachers were sent to polyclinics

Following an inspection by the Santos Municipal Health Department, the Emília Maria Reis Municipal School Unit, in the Campo Grande neighborhood of Santos, on the coast of São Paulo, was closed as a precaution after new cases of scabies (human scabies) were identified on site. According to information, all the cases were people who should have been treated and remained in shelters.

Up until Friday (28), the date of closure of all activities of the unit, among the 458 students, 40 cases of scabies were recorded among the people attending the unit, 32 students and eight professionals.

“All were directed to the residents’ reference polyclinics, assisted by the public health network, for adequate medical care. It is worth noting that, before the closure, the school had already informed the students’ parents and staff on how to prevent the disease. The closure of the school, not foreseen by the protocol, became an option to protect all students and staff,” reads a note from the Municipality.

The secretariat highlighted that during this period, the school will be cleaned for disinfection. With the closure of departments and the suspension of in-person lessons, from this Monday (1) until July 10, lessons will be remote. During this period, the municipal educational network will enter a school break period.

Scabies

Scabies is not a serious disease or a reportable one, except in the case of epidemics, which has not occurred so far in the municipality of Santos. It is a contagious disease caused by a type of mite and causes itching all over the body, which can lead to skin infections with redness and blisters.

Transmission occurs easily from person to person, especially in closed environments. Human scabies is benign and treatment is done with ointments, lotions or soaps and medications recommended by the doctor.

To prevent their proliferation, it is necessary to adopt environmental hygiene with bleach diluted in water, sanitize objects such as mattresses and sofas, places where mites proliferate, and wash separately clothes, sheets and towels used by infected people.
