Doctor says stress, anxiety and depression are part of a series of causes of tinnitus
In an interview with the British tabloid The mirror, Chris MartinColdplay singer, said he has suffered from ringing in the ears since 2002. The artist revealed that he felt guilty for listening to music too loudly during his adolescence, which can lead to this disorder.
According to the ENT specialist Tanit Sancheztinnitus has several organic and emotional causes. It is estimated between 10 and 15% in different studies: 17% in the United States and 22% among residents of São Paulo, according to a 2015 survey by the University of São Paulo (USP). According to some studies, however, anxiety affects between 9 and 20% of the population, reaching 30% of individuals with this problem.
The doctor says that the relationship between tinnitus and anxiety, in some cases, can be associated, since people with emotional situations at certain times in their lives, be they stress, anxiety or depression, can have ringing in the ears as one of the symptoms diagnosed as a combination of anxiety, depression or pathological stress.
Tanit clarifies that a person can have an organic, physical cause of tinnitus, such as acoustic trauma. “After being told by the doctor that there is no cure or reading on Google that there is no cure, they become anxious because of the presence of organic tinnitus,” she points out. She points out that, on the other hand, medications used to treat anxiety and/or depression can be ototoxic, toxic to the function of the ear and, therefore, cause tinnitus.
However, the doctor emphasizes that the relationship between tinnitus, stress, anxiety or depression is complex. “It is not known exactly at what level it occurs in each person or why it occurs, but rather there is a set of factors that can be associated, including changes in brain chemistry, where in anxiety there is an increase in adrenaline and noradrenaline, with a decrease in neurotransmitters, feel-good chemicals, such as endorphins and serotonin. Since balanced brain chemistry is important for the proper functioning of the ear, this is also another option that justifies the association between the two,” he explains.

According to Tanit, when the patient, after a long search for organic causes, has nothing detectable and associates the presence or onset of tinnitus with moments of anxiety, there are several treatment options. “It is worth understanding the situation that generates stress, which can be something unique, such as a competition, a wedding, a work meeting or a more chronic situation. The person has an anxious and depressed profile, so therapy is quite important. There is a lot of research that documents the effectiveness of cognitive-behavioral therapy in improving both anxiety and tinnitus,” he emphasizes.
The doctor also comments that lifestyle is welcome, with a good and balanced diet, regular meditation, which can bring improvements to brain chemistry, as well as physical activity to promote cerebral circulation metabolism and anxiety control.
