  • It is best to use for composting grass clippings, dead leaves, crushed eggshells, animal manure, bird droppings, drunk tea, coffee grounds, leftover raw vegetables and fruits, hay, straw, stale bread, seed hulls, thin branches, chopped feathers, uncoloured paper.
  • Meat, chicken, fish, bones, milk and dairy products, fatty foods, seafood, perennial and infested weeds, dog and cat droppings, human feces, oils, coated cardboard and wallpaper are not suitable for composting.
  • The proportion of green and brown compost must be respected: it is preferable that the first is half as important as the second. Green compost includes fresh plants and grass, tea leaves, fruit and vegetable remains, brown compost includes branch trimmings, dry leaves and straw, shavings, paper and cardboard.
  • A base layer of compost made up of twigs, mulch or old potting soil should be added to the bottom of the box. A mixture of green and brown compost and, if necessary, biofertilizers or a solution of one tablespoon of yeast, 200 grams of sugar and one liter of water should be placed on this layer.
  • The unpleasant smell of rot in the compost can appear for various reasons – from the fact that too much moisture, green matter or protein foods have gotten into it. If this happens, the contents of the box should be turned over by adding carbonaceous organic matter – dry branches and cardboard.
