Can You Workout During Your Period? Gynecologist Explains the Details

Exercising during your period can benefit your physical and emotional well-being.

Working out during your period can be a challenge for people who exercise regularly. After all, it’s hard to stay active with so many hormonal changes causing physical and emotional symptoms, which directly impact our mood.

However, it is precisely during the menstrual cycle that we must move and exercise. According to gynecologist Natacha Machado, working out during your period, whether in the gym or outdoors, can help improve all the symptoms of menstruation.

“There is an increase in endorphin production, a reduction in pain, anxiety, PMS and also a reduction in menstrual bleeding. Therefore, it is a very good advice to exercise during the menstrual period”, says the clinical director of Plenapausa, the first femtech in Brazil with particular attention to the information, care and treatment of women over 40 years of age.

Respect your body

To train your period safely, the expert emphasizes that it is important respect the body’s signals and adapt the intensity of the exercises as needed. Nowadays, there are pads, menstrual cups and absorbent panties, which help to promote greater comfort during the menstrual cycle.

The menstrual cycle is divided into phases, and each can affect mood and exercise performance in different ways. In the follicular phase, which occurs before ovulation, many women report feeling more energetic, making it a good time to ramp up their workouts. In the luteal phase, after ovulation, the body may require more rest.

“There is no impediment [de treinar menstruada]unless the discomfort caused by menstruation itself prevents you from exercising. What often happens is that in the premenstrual period they have a slightly lower income. So, if during menstruation she has no pain, no cramps, the blood flow is moderate, she has a better performance than in the premenstrual period”, concludes the gynecologist.
