15 Unusual Ways to Use a Microwave

Do you think lip balm and potato chips have anything in common?

You probably guessed it already: both can be cooked in the microwave. But it’s not just about two more recipes: the microwave oven is capable of much more! It will help…

…make cookies

Using the microwave, you can make chocolate chip cookies in just five minutes, a great way to satisfy your sweet tooth without spending a lot of time. (And you can make just four cookies and get back to the good life of salads and turkey chops the next day, or even at dinnertime.)

…make popcorn

We’re sure you’ve just thought or even said out loud: “Thanks, Cap!” – after all, in any store you can buy bags of corn to make microwave popcorn. What if we told you that you can make do with just cereal? Watch the video instructions in case you need popcorn without palm oil, suspicious food additives or dyes.

PS If during the first experiment only one grain exploded, it is most likely that the plate did not fit the bowl tightly enough – you need to try a different combination of dishes.

PPS If there are any whole kernels left at the bottom, simply put them back in the bag and use them the next time you make popcorn.

…make lip balm

For this you only need three ingredients and five minutes.

  • Place two tablespoons of coconut oil and two tablespoons of wax granules in a cup.
  • Place the mug in the microwave for one minute, stirring the contents every 10 seconds.
  • Take out a mug (be careful, it will be hot!) and add 16 drops of your favorite essential oil.
  • Pour the resulting balm into small jars or lipstick tubes and let it cool.

…cook chips

How about homemade potato chips with just a touch of oil and lots of natural seasonings? We are sure that after eating these, you will never want to eat the store-bought ones again!

  • Cut one or two potatoes into thin slices – you can use a vegetable cutter or grater for this.
  • Rinse the potato slices with water and pat dry with paper towels.
  • Place the slices in a bowl, drizzle with oil of your choice and toss to coat.
  • Place potato slices in a single layer on a microwave-safe plate.
  • Sprinkle the slices with spices to taste – you can, for example, use herbs, paprika, garlic or simply salt.
  • Place the baking tray in the oven for 3 to 5 minutes at 800 W (cooking time depends on the thickness of the chips).
  • Remove the chips from the microwave and let them cool completely (they will then become crispy).

PS Don’t have a vegetable peeler or a special grater for slicing? Use a regular knife – the chips will be a little thicker, but will remain just as tasty.

PPS When cooking, pay attention to the edge of the chips: when they become dry and crispy, it means they are ready.

…boil a poached egg

Many people think that it is difficult to prepare a poached egg at home. Well, the microwave can change that!

  • Fill the cup halfway with water, add a little salt and a tablespoon of vinegar.
  • Stir the egg into the mixture and place the mug in the microwave on high for one minute.

The poached egg is ready!

…cook the corn

Freshly cooked corn is wonderful, but a kitchen without air conditioning to cook it when it’s +35 outside is a local branch of hell. So it’s better to use a microwave than a stove – just put the cob in the husk or in a bag for five minutes.

PS Take out the corn and open the bag carefully, it will be very hot!

…make gluten-free bread

How about not only fresh, but really fresh sandwich bread? You can cook it in the microwave in just a minute and a half!

  • Mix one large egg, one teaspoon of water and three tablespoons of buttermilk in a bowl.
  • Add a third cup of gluten-free baking mix, a quarter teaspoon of baking powder and a teaspoon of sugar.
  • Mix the dough until smooth and place it in the bottom of the sandwich container.
  • Place the container in the microwave for 85 to 90 seconds, let the finished bread cool, then cut it into two slices.

…boil vegetables

No matter what you need boiled potatoes or beets for – for a salad or a side dish: you can cook them in 10 minutes in the microwave.

  • Wash the vegetables, make several pricks in each one with a fork (in the potatoes – a must!).
  • Place vegetables in a microwave-safe bowl with a lid.
  • Place the pan in the microwave on high for 10 minutes.
  • Let the vegetables sit in the covered pan for another 10 minutes, checking for doneness with a fork.
  • If the potatoes and beets are not yet “cooked,” microwave them for an additional five minutes.

…dry the herbs

Have you bought too many fresh herbs and realized you won’t be able to use them before they go bad? Use the microwave to dry them!

  • Wash the green vegetables and let them dry.
  • Arrange the herbs on a plate.
  • Place it in the microwave for three to five minutes.
  • Grind the greens into powder with your hands or in a mortar.

…peel the garlic

The microwave can make peeling garlic a lot easier! Place the head in it for 20 seconds and the steam generated will separate the skin from the cloves – it will then be very easy to remove.

…soften stale bread

The oven can also help preserve old bread: Wrap the bread in a damp paper towel and microwave it for 10 seconds. (Or just put bread and a cup of water in the microwave for the same amount of time—you’ll get about the same result.)

…cut onions and don’t cry

Of course, technically you’ll still have to cut the onion, but you can do it without tears: To do this, first put the head in the microwave for 30 seconds.

…make cappuccino foam

This is perhaps one of the most unusual ways to use a microwave: it turns out that it can replace a cappuccino maker. Pour the milk into a small jar, close the lid and shake vigorously for a minute until it becomes frothy. Place the container in the microwave for 30 seconds – the temperature will stabilize the foam and you will be able to make a great cappuccino.

…peel the tomatoes

Does the recipe say to “Peel the tomatoes”? To do this, you don’t have to scald them with boiling water: cut the tomatoes in half, place the flesh side down on a plate, and microwave it. Once the skin is wrinkled, it can easily be removed with a fork. (This trick works in other cases, such as if you want to put skinless peaches in a pie.)

…cook the bacon

Don’t have room for a hot plate on the stove to cook bacon for breakfast? The microwave to the rescue!

  • Line a plate with a paper towel.
  • Place the bacon on top in a single layer.
  • Place another paper towel on top.
  • Place the bacon in the microwave for three to four minutes on high.
  • Let the bacon cool for a few minutes.
