‘Baldlocs’: Discover a Unique Dreadlocks Technique for Bald People Developed by a Rio Barber

‘Baldloc’ stands out to renew self-esteem of black men; The option is more affordable than hair transplant

The barber shop Africarioca Conceito, created by entrepreneur Lucas Preto and located in Santa Cruz, in the western zone of Rio de Janeiro, has developed a technique that allows bald people to wear dreadlocks.

“baldlocs” is a highlight of the barber shop specializing in beauty services for the black population. The mode developed by the professional covers everything from the shape of the face to the classification of hair of a bald person.

The technique was developed by Lucas two years ago as an idea to innovate in the Afro beauty market. The procedure is performed using the needle technique and does not use substances harmful to the scalp, allowing and stimulating growth in regions still subject to hair growth.

Lucas says that while creating the procedure, he spent more than 19 hours applying the technique to his first client and achieved satisfactory results.

“There is nothing like this in Brazil or in the world. Seeing what Africarioca has become is a confirmation of all the hard work we are doing. Who would have thought that that barber shop that started with R$ 3,000 borrowed from a friend would become such a powerhouse,” Lucas comments.

The professional emphasizes that the procedure, which costs between R$ 2,000 and R$ 3,000, is a more affordable option for bald people, taking into account that a hair transplant costs around R$ 8,000.

“Only those who suffer from baldness know how difficult it is to look at oneself in the mirror”

According to data from the Brazilian Hair Society (SBC), more than 42 million Brazilians suffer from alopecia, also known as baldness. The research also points out that 80% of men over the age of 80 suffer from baldness and that 30% of women over the age of 50 may also have some experience of severe hair loss.

Regardless of gender, hair is one of the major factors that influence human self-esteem and dealing with its loss is not such an easy process.

The baldlocs procedure can also be performed on straight locks, as long as there are 7 centimetres of hair to keep the prosthesis firmly in place.

“Only those who suffer from baldness know how difficult it is to look at yourself in the mirror. Our goal is to spread it around the world and help as many people as possible,” says Lucas Preto.

In 2018, when the salon opened and baldlocs hadn’t yet been created, Lucas’s team consisted of only three people. Today, the barber’s monthly income has allowed him to employ 15 people, who support their families, mostly through their dreadlocks.

“Today it is much more common for 10-year-olds to have dreadlocks, which was unimaginable a few years ago because it was ‘frowned upon’. Thanks to the social struggles of the black movements, dreadlocks have become a point of connection between the oppressed self and self-esteem. Here people literally cry when they look in the mirror after I finish my work,” Lucas says.
